Early History

New Westminster is a city located in British Columbia, Canada, situated on the north bank of the Fraser River at the mouth of the Quay. The area was first inhabited by the Musqueam Nation, an indigenous people who had established themselves along the riverbanks for centuries. In 1808, Simon Fraser New Westminster led an expedition to explore the region and establish trade relationships with local tribes. His arrival marked the beginning of European settlement in the area.

Founding and Growth

In 1859, New Westminster was designated as the capital city of British Columbia by Queen Victoria herself. The decision was made after a bitter dispute between the colonial government and the Hudson’s Bay Company over the site selection for the new province’s capital. The company had chosen Fort Langley as its base, while the governor-general chose New Westminster due to its proximity to the Fraser River and access to transportation.

During the late 19th century, New Westminster experienced significant growth as a major commercial center and shipping hub. Its strategic location on the river enabled it to become an important link between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia. The construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the early 20th century further solidified the city’s status as a key transportation gateway.

Geography

New Westminster is situated approximately 25 kilometers south of Vancouver, along the Fraser River delta. Its terrain consists mainly of low-lying wetlands, forests, and marshy areas that have historically been prone to flooding due to the river’s tidal flow patterns. This unique geography has led to numerous engineering projects over the years aimed at stabilizing the land and protecting against flood damage.

The Quay area is one of New Westminster’s most prominent features, where the Fraser River meets the ocean. The Quay houses a historic park featuring walking trails, public art installations, and waterfront restaurants offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Other notable areas in the city include Downtown New Westminster, which has undergone revitalization efforts to promote local businesses and culture.

Municipal Government

New Westminster operates under the governance model typical for Canadian municipalities: a mayor-council system with an elected council, responsible for passing bylaws, setting municipal policies, and allocating budgets. As of this writing, the city’s government comprises 11 city councillors who serve staggered four-year terms alongside the directly elected mayor.
